EU Slaps Apple and Meta with Nearly $800 Million in Fines Under New Digital Rules

In a bold move that signals a new era of digital regulation, the European Union has fined tech giants Apple and Meta a combined total of nearly $800 million. This landmark decision is the first major enforcement under the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA), a set of rules designed to keep big tech companies in check and ensure fair competition in the digital world.

What Is the Digital Markets Act?

Before we dive into the details of the fines, it’s important to understand the background. The Digital Markets Act, which came into force in 2023, is a set of regulations aimed at curbing the power of large digital platforms—often referred to as “gatekeepers.” These companies control access to popular online services like app stores, messaging platforms, and social media, giving them enormous influence over how users and businesses interact online.

The DMA aims to level the playing field by forcing these gatekeepers to follow a new set of rules designed to protect competition and consumer rights.

Why Apple Was Fined

Apple has been fined approximately €500 million (around $540 million) for preventing app developers from informing users about cheaper subscription options available outside of Apple’s App Store.

For example, if an app offers a lower price on its website, Apple’s rules used to stop developers from telling users about it. The EU found this practice anti-competitive, arguing that it limits consumer choice and forces users to pay higher prices—often with Apple taking a commission on top.

Under the DMA, this kind of restriction is no longer allowed, and the fine reflects the EU’s serious commitment to changing these business practices.

What Meta Did Wrong

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, was hit with a €200 million (about $215 million) fine over its controversial “consent or pay” model.

This model gave users two options: either agree to be tracked for personalized ads or pay a fee to use the platforms without ads. Regulators said this approach pressured users into giving up their data and didn’t provide a truly fair choice, which goes against the principles of the DMA.

Reactions from Apple and Meta

Both companies have expressed disagreement with the EU’s decisions.

  • Apple defended its App Store policies by saying they help maintain privacy and security. The company has said it plans to challenge the fine.

  • Meta also intends to appeal, arguing that its subscription model is legal and offers users more control, not less.

This pushback sets the stage for lengthy legal battles, but the EU appears ready to stand its ground.

What This Means for the Tech Industry

These fines aren’t just about money—they send a clear message to other tech giants that the EU is serious about regulating digital markets. More importantly, they show that user rights, fair pricing, and competition are now front and center in the European digital economy.

It also signals the beginning of stricter oversight, with other big names like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft likely to face similar scrutiny if they don't adjust their business models.

Final Thoughts

The EU's fines against Apple and Meta mark a turning point in how powerful tech companies are treated in Europe. As digital platforms continue to shape our daily lives, governments around the world are watching closely. Whether these rules eventually expand beyond Europe remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: the age of unchecked tech power may be coming to an end.

We’ll keep following this story as it develops. For now, this is a major moment in the evolving relationship between technology, regulation, and consumer rights.
